Windsor Castle

Windsor is the medieval castle and the official residence of the British Empire in the area of Windsor, Berkshire, United Kingdom. The villa is famous because it was long inhabited by the United Kingdom Royal family and also because of the magnificent architecture. The castle was built after the Norman invasion of the Kingdom by William the Conqueror. During the reign of Henry I, the Castle began to be used as a residence for the Royal family is the United Kingdom. More than five hundred people lived and worked in Windsor Castle, thus making it the most massive inhabited ancient castle in the world.

Windsor Castle History

Windsor Castle was built in the 11th century by William the Conqueror and was witness to the historical events in the United Kingdom since then. It has a model of the medieval building with Georgian and Victorian architectural styles, and some touches of neo-gothic style. Since it was first built, the Windsor Castle had many changes and renovations, depending on the preferences and tastes of the King who was in power at the time.

Windsor Castle consists of several parts of the Castle and grounds, which overall has a wide up to 5 hectares. Windsor Castle building consists of three parts, namely the middle ward, the upper ward, and the lower ward.


Middle Ward

Middle Ward is in the middle of the Castle. The building is built like a brick wall that surrounds the artificial chalk hills as high as 15 m at the top of the Hill stood a fake Round Tower, the central tower of Windsor Castle which was built in the 12th century and enhanced in the 19th century. The interior RoundTower expanded in 1991 – 1993 to provide space for the archives of the Kingdom.

The Upper Ward

The upper Ward is composed of a number of the main building of the Castle and is surrounded by structures that form the walls of the circumference of a rectangle-shaped. The upper Ward borders the northern part of the terrace overlooking the River Thames and the southern terrace overlooking the gardens of the Castle. The second yard was built by Hugh May in the 17th century.

One of the rooms that dominated the Upper State Wardadalah Apartment that occupies the northern side of the wall. By designer Jeffrey Wyattville, every room in State Apartment is designed to have different architectural style, with furniture and decorations that customize the theme of each space.

Some of the room brings the classic, Gothic style, and the Rococo style with some combination of Jacobean elements in it. Some place that became part of the State is the Grand Apartment Reception Room; White, Green and Crimson Drawing Room; The Queen's Presence Chamber; The Queen's Audience Chamber; King's Dining Room; State Dining Room; Lantern Lobby; Private Chappel; and the Great Kitchen.

The Lower Ward

The lower Ward is located at the bottom and is located in the West of the Round Tower. The area was originally built in the style of the middle ages, but most the building and then renovated and made with a gothic style by the architect Anthony Salvin and Edward Blore. One of the buildings that are located in the Lower Ward is St George's Chapel. The chapel was built in the late 15th-century perpendicular gothic architectural style (such as basic style Westminster Palace). To the East of St George's Chapel, the standing Lady Chapel, Chapel, built in memory of the late husband of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert.

At the western end of the Lower Ward, there is a Horseshoe Cloister, built in 1480 as the home of the pastor of the chapel. Behind the Horseshoe Cloister there Curfew Tower, one of the oldest buildings of the Castle built in the 13th century.

Windsor Castle is surrounded by a garden area that was added later. One area of the garden that was made in the 19th century was the Home Park, which includes the grounds, two agricultural land, and some cottages. Bordering the Home Park on the North Shore, there is another garden area, Windsor Great Park, covering an area of 1900 acres. In addition to the garden, Windsor Castle also has a path that is referred to as The Long Walk. The Long Walk which is located in the southern part of the castle is a 5 km road with a row of trees on the two sides.
